When super typhoon Winnie hit Quezon province in 2004, Sagip Kapamilya of ABS-CBN Foundation (AFI), responded to the cries of the ailing residents of Real, Nakar and Infanta in Quezon Province. However, AFI’s intervention did not end by merely helping the affected families with their immediate needs to survive and recover. To further assist the devastated communities, AFI turned over their development initiatives to ABS- CBN Bayan to bring their lives back to normal and eventually rise above their situation.

Education
Sagip Kapamilya and ABS-CBN Bayan provided 35 Educational Television packages worth 1.9 million pesos for schools of Real, Infanta and Nakar. These ETV packages have become useful and effective teaching tools for Science, Math, English, Literature and History subjects.

Housing

Ruined community facilities and road network, and homeless families are some of the problems that faced the municipalities of Quezon after the visit of the raging Winnie. In response to this situation, 86 Gawad Kalinga houses amounting to Php 25 million were built from funds raised by Sagip Kapamilya. Another Php 2 million were allocated for 712 families.

Livelihood
With the support of the LGUs, Sagip Kapamilya dedicated a total of Php 17 million for livelihood rehabilitation program that helped a total of 1,664 families in Infanta, Nakar and Real. In cooperation with people organization, 23 livelihood projects are now operational. Business clusters have been formed based on the type of industry which includes livestock and poultry, agriculture, fishing, handicrafts, and charcoal-briquette.

To enhance entrepreneurship skills and to attain business success, a series of entrepreneurship, management and skills training have been conducted in Infanta, Quezon. At present, a trade post is being constructed in Nakar so that the people can enhance and increase their economic activities.

Water system
A total of 600 households in Gumian, Infanta Together with the Parish Social Action Center of Infanta and Local Government of Infanta, the Gumian town received a 2.4 million peso-grant to repair its water filtering facility, and existing 2.5 kilometers pipes. This benefited 600 households in Gumian, Quezon.

Health & Nutrition

Knowing that nutrition and academic performance of students are directly related to each other, Sagip Kapamilya funded the establishment of a Nutripan Bakery in Daraga North Central School.
The bakery produces vitamin-fortified bread that is being distributed to the students during snack time everyday. The children’s weight increased and their performance in class improved.  The bakery also served other public schools.
