Mrs. Delia Bergantinos Ibañez was born and raised in Roxas City. She is married to Raul Ibanez, a native of Roxas City as well. Delia is one of the 13 children of a family who lived by making dried fish. She has two children.

Mrs. Ibañez learned the business from her mother. Of the 13 siblings, 11 of them are engaged into dried fish business. She started her own business by selling consigned dried fish. Without her own capital to finance the business, Mrs. Ibañez for several years capitalized on the trust of wholesalers who gave her credit line. And as her sales grew, she was able to venture on her own dried fish business.

Her family’s dried fish production site is located in Baranggay Baybay Roxas City. She employs 4 families in making “pinakas” or daing (dried fish) while 2 families in the communities are employed in placing bamboo trays for drying at the seashore.

While most of us would think that dried fish is simply placing the fishes under the sun and left to dry, there’s more to it than meets the eye. Mrs. Ibañez shared the process that they do to maintain the quality of the dried fish. At hours when the heat of the sun is intense, they pull out their fish from the sun for some hours and bring it back to dry again. This process keeps the fresh taste and fish oil intact. This makes Roxas dried fish different from any other provinces, says Mrs. Ibañez.

With an initial loan of Php 5,000.00, Delia availed the group loan program of ABS-CBN Bayan on May 2007.  Later on, she upgraded her loan and availed of the individual loan program where she can borrow bigger amount of money to expand her business.  Today, Delia’s dried fish is distributed to the provinces of Davao, Iloilo City, Roxas and even to the markets of  Divisoria in  Manila.
